Wild Safari Wildlife Collection
Unlike most other great apes, orangutans spend nearly all of their time in trees. There are only two known species, both of which are found only in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. They are very intelligent, and can learn sign language as well as how to use tools.
-
History: Studied extensively for their knowledge and learning capabilities, orangutans have showed an ability to master sophisticated tools, solve puzzles, and communicate through a basic form of sign language. Some researchers even believe different populations of wild orangutans have unique and distinct cultures. Unfortunately, the Bornean species of orangutan is endangered while the Sumatran species is critically endangered, both of which are suffering from a loss of their natural habitat from large-scale logging.
