History: The largest of all venomous snakes, cobras can grow up to 18 feet long (in the case of the King Cobra), though those of the genus Naja are much smaller at around 6 feet. Their hood is actually a controllable elongation of their neck ribs that they use to appear larger when they feel threatened. Interestingly, cobras are very vital to the medical field, because research of their venom has produced treatment for the bites of many different snake species.
